Problems
  • Cultivation of plants and forestation on critical or extreme locations is most difficult (and sometimes impossible) with conventional methods :
    • sterile, sour, poor or dry soils, heavy-metal-containing, toxic and contaminated soils,
    • re-cultivation areas, sanitary landfills, highway embankments, salinated areas,
    • maccia, steppes, deserts, mountains, slopes, erosion areas

The Biological Way
  • in nature, nearly all plants occur in natural symbiosis with fungi (mycorrhizae)

Protection
  • mycorrhizae balance the pH value in the substrate, they degrade toxic substances
  • mycorrhizae increase heavy-metal and salt tolerance of plants and trees

Water and Nutrients
  • mycorrhizae supply water to their host plants from great distances, depths, and out of soil adherence
  • mycorrhizae gain, store and provide great amounts of nutrients and make them available to the plants, always in full accordance with their actual requirements

Mechanical Strength
  • mycorrhizae protect the sensible fine roots, like a coat, against mechanical stresses   during transport, transplantation, cultivation, etc.
  • mycorrhizae improve the soil structure with expanding networks of hyphae, and thereby they stabilise plants and soils.

Fertilisation Vs. Mycorrhiza
  • However, mycorrhizae react very sensitively to nitrogen: at high fertilisation levels (as wanted in tree nurseries, etc.) these fungi simply die (viz. AFZ 8, 1992).


  • Previously, in order to protect the existing mycorrhizae, no efficient fertilisation was possible at the same time when mycorrhization took place. In later stages of the cultivation the possibilities of additional fertilisation were highly restricted.

Application
